We're talking full-on visual novel segments here.

Still, even for Persona, be prepared to do a LOT of reading. It also helps if you think of them as Persona 3 Arena and Persona 3 Ultimax the Persona 4 gang mostly feel like they don't have a lot to do.Īrena does involve a lot of repetition, but you do at least get the advantage of different perspectives, so I didn't think it was so bad. Be warned though, both games take about 20 hours each to get through all the story content, they’re pretty long for fighting games (they’re essentially visual novels).Īs someone who doesn't normally play fighting games and would likely be crushed in even casual fights with real people, I have no regrets buying either Arena or Ultimax but neither story is particularly essential. Overall, while there are some bumps in the experience, it’s still a pretty great time. Personally, given that Ultimax is modeled more after P3’s aesthetic, and that the P3 story mode is leagues better than the P4 one, I have this gut feeling that the former was the main focus here while the latter having to have some sort of involvement due to Arena’s set up + popularity. Some pretty good character development happens here too. It was great to see the P3 crew again, but also seeing that they have faced their own struggles since the end of P3, as well as still coming to terms with what happened in their original game. The P3 story is MUCH better, and pretty good on it’s own standing.

While the P4 cast in Arena had some semblance of their personalities from the original game, their characters felt so one note in Ultimax, with the story essentially being everyone cheering on Yu in one big battle, that’s it. Ultimax is divided into the story being focused on the P4 and P3 crews separately. Labrys’s backstory was interesting too and she has become one of my favorite Persona characters given how cool she is.
PERSONA 4 ARENA ULTIMAX DEVELOPERS PLUS
Simple, but charming enough to see the P4 cast interacting some more, plus seeing what some of the P3 crew had been up to.
